Dr. Ernest J. Feleppa Named 2015 IEEE Fellow
NEW YORK, NY – Dr. Ernest J. Feleppa, Laboratory Director of the Riverside Research Lizzi Center for Biomedical Engineering, was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The IEEE is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to fostering technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.
Dr. Feleppa was elevated to Fellow for his pioneering use of quantitative ultrasound in medical applications, which offers great promise for early disease detection, imaging, and monitoring and for the planning and delivery of treatment. His research applying advanced ultrasound methods of tissue typing and imaging is used to characterize tissues of the eye, liver, kidney, vasculature, prostate gland, and lymph nodes. Although focused on the detection and monitoring of cancer in these organs, his research methods also can be used to identify plaque in coronary and carotid arteries, enabling early detection and treatment of conditions leading to heart attacks and strokes.
Dr. Feleppa is also a Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). In 2009, he received the prestigious Joseph H. Holmes Pioneer Award in Basic Science from the AIUM.
Riverside Research is honored to count Dr. Feleppa among its employees. Hired in 1969, Dr. Feleppa has contributed to 45 years of research in the public interest and in support of the United States government.
