DAYTON, OH – Riverside Research, a not-for-profit scientific research company primarily supporting the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Intelligence Community (IC), presented at the Using Remote Sensing to Empower the Public to Address Water Pollution workshop, in Racine, WI, on 14-16 September.
Riverside Research was invited to support this workshop with the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) to discuss the Water-Lens project. NGREC is a collaborative partnership between the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Illinois Natural History Survey, and Lewis and Clark Community College. They bring expertise in studying and monitoring natural resources of large rivers and their watersheds, providing essential information for the sustainable management of these ecosystems. Director of Modeling and Application Development, John Ploschnitznig, represented Riverside Research and addressed the use of satellites and multi/hyperspectral technology to monitor rivers and watersheds.
“In situ, water monitoring for America’s rivers has become more prevalent today,” said Ploschnitznig. “Riverside Research’s role is to help transition multi/hyperspectral sensors onto future small and nanosatellites and use this technology to monitor rivers and watersheds to assess their cleanliness performance.”
The workshop brought together non-profit organizations, scientists, and industry professionals to discuss the available tools for monitoring water quality in the US, using remote sensing data and how they might be better used to protect freshwater resources.
