Riverside Research provides expertise in advanced acoustical and optical technology for a wide range of biomedical applications. The diagnostic studies currently undertaken by the Lizzi Center apply ultrasonic and optoacoustic methods to imaging and detection and diagnosis of cancerous lesions, guidance of diagnostic biopsies, and targeting and monitoring of treatment. These diagnostic studies have been pursued successfully in applications involving prostate cancer, metastatic disease in lymph nodes, tumors in the eye, breast cancer, blood vessel conditions (such as plaque and thrombi), and liver disease. Closely related studies have developed novel means of ultrasound-transducer fabrication, ultrasound-echo-signal processing, and ultrasound-contrast-agent characterization. The therapeutic studies undertaken by the Lizzi Center currently emphasize the use of high-intensity focused ultrasound for treating disease. These studies have been pursued successfully in applications involving ophthalmic and cardiac diseases and cancer. Recent studies have incorporated combinations of optical and acoustic means of disease imaging, evaluation, and treatment.
